My name is Kristen, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN*) with a passion for endurance sports, good food, animals and the Virginia Tech Hokies! I first started running when I was 9 years old (thanks dad!), so I guess you can say it's a defining factor in my life. Many years later I am still going and have completed multiple marathons, ultra-marathons and triathlons, including two half-iron distance tri's. My husband and pup also run and are my biggest fans.

I love life and love a good adventure. I'm living my dream job as a dietitian so that I may help others reach their true health potential and achieve total wellness. Currently I'm serving as a long term care dietitian and nutrition consultant while pursing long-distance endeavors in running and triathlon and sharing my passion for nutrition. I follow a plant-based (mostly-vegan) lifestyle with emphasis on eating local foods where possible. I love experimenting with new recipes and relying on whole foods to fuel my adventures. I hope you will enjoy my stories about food, fitness and the Hokies!

In order to obtain my RD/RDN* credentials, I graduated with a BS in Dietetics, Human Nutrition Foods and Exercise from Virginia Tech and completed a 9-month Dietetic Internship through Virginia Tech's northern Virginia campus. I then passed the RD examination through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). I also have a MS in Nutrition Education and Behavior through Virginia Tech and a Certificate in Training in Weight Management through CDR.

  2. I currently live in Blacksburg (although a Maryland resident - husband is in PhD program). I am looking to go back to school (as a career changer) to become a RD. Do you have any tips, thoughts are advice?

    1. Angela-- sorry for the slow response. I say go with your passion! Get out and shadow RD's in various areas to get a better idea of where you might want to specialize. Check out eatright.org, it's a great resource for current and RD's in training. I will try to put up a post about the process of becoming an RD and my experience.

  3. Your dog is just like my dog. I actually can't believe there is another dog similar to him. He's half German Shepherd, half Red Heeler. Well, unless your dog is full GS and hasn't grown in to it yet. Well, anyways...so cute.

    1. KW-- she's definitely blue heeler, most likely with some german shepherd mixed in too. She's the best!

  4. Hi Kristen! I came across your blog while surfing Pinterest for energy foods. I have looked around and you are so inspiring for a new runner like me! I would love some tips if you have time.
